As per an order of the Election Commission, the district
administration officials will conduct physical verification of the
Electronic Voting Machines used in the Lok Sabha elections of 2009 in
Bidar on Thursday.
Officials will crosscheck the
machines and match them against their numbers listed in the election
records. This report will be sent to the EC, official sources said.
The
EC is acting on the directions of the High Court, issued in an election
petition filed by Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, who was defeated by N.
Dharam Singh in that election. The petition alleged that officials of
the district administration had switched EVMs for Mr. Singh’s benefit.
“Mr. Singh had contested the petition saying it was not maintainable.
The High Court had stayed it. But the stay has been vacated now, and we
have received instructions for the physical verification,” sources said.
