International tennis tourney begins in Bidar today.

Women tennis players from nine countries will be participating in the International Tennis Federation’s Tournament starting at the Bidar Police Tennis Club from Monday.
The prize money for winners is $10,000. The players include Oleksandra Korashvilli from Ukraine, Wing-Yau Venise, Hong Kong, Nungnadda Wannasuk, Thailand, Zi Yang, China, Yumi Miyazaki and Risa Hasegawa, Japan, Ju-Eun Kim, Korea, Risa Hasegawa, Japan, Yang Chia Hsien, Taipei, Agathe Timsit, France and Prerna Bhambri, Sai Samhita, Prarthana Thombare, Anushka Bhargava, Vaniya Dangwal among others from India.
P.C. Jaffer, Deputy Commissioner, told presspersons here on Sunday that the tournament would popularise sports in the district.
Three tennis courts
He congratulated the Bidar Police Tennis Club led by N. Satish Kumar, Superintendent of Police, who had worked hard to build three tennis courts atop the hill in Habsi Kot on the outskirts of Bidar.
Mr. Kumar said the club was set up with contributions from the public, tennis enthusiasts and the police.
He thanked Inspector General of Police K.V. Gagandeep and senior IAS officer M. Lakshminarayana for convincing the ITF authorities to organise the tournament.
Ashok Kheny, Managing Director of Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises, is the title sponsor, said Sunil Yajaman, tournament director.
The tournament has been named ‘Ashok Kheny ITF Bidar Open’, he said.
Sheetal Iyer is the referee for the event.
The inaugural match will be on Monday at 10 a.m.
The finals are scheduled for October 6 at 11 a.m. Matches would go on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Entry is free.
